What is TMJ?

TMJ is a term that you may have heard of before, but you may not know exactly what it means. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is a joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. This joint is located in front of your ear on each side of your head, and it allows you to move your jaw up and down, side to side, and back and forth.

Symptoms of TMJ

If you’ve ever experienced pain or discomfort in this area, it could be a result of TMJ disorder (or temporomandibular dysfunction). This condition can cause a wide range of symptoms, such as jaw pain and misfunction:

  • Jaw Clicking, Popping, Or Grating Sound When Opening or Closing the Mouth
  • Difficulty Or Discomfort in Chewing or Biting
  • Dull, Aching Pain in The Face Along with Jaw Pain or Tenderness
  • Reduced Ability to Open or Close the Mouth

Beyond jaw issues, the misalignment and tension derived from TMJ disorder can cause problems to radiate throughout the body:

  • Chronic Headaches – Can Range from Migraines and Cluster Headaches to Tension Headaches. The Intensity Is More in The Mornings.
  • Difficulty In Breathing and Shortness of Breath
  • Lack Of Balance and Unstable Gait
  • Tinnitus
  • Earaches, Dizziness, And Ringing Sensation in The Ear
  • Hearing Loss
  • Chronic Neck and Shoulder Pain

How TMJ Treatment Works

During your visit, Dr. Mahmood will conduct a comprehensive assessment to accurately diagnose the cause of your temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Based on the identified problem, she will recommend suitable treatment options to alleviate your discomfort. The primary objectives of treating TMJ disorder include halting the progression of the condition, safeguarding the teeth against additional damage, correcting any bite misalignment contributing to the symptoms, and ultimately providing effective pain relief for your TMJ. Rest assured that you will receive a detailed evaluation and personalized care for your specific needs.

Treatment plans depend on the individual patient and the degree of dysfunction. Our Upper Kirby dentist offers non-surgical TMJ therapy options including:

  • Painless Laser Therapy
  • Dental Therapy Using a Bite Appliance, Such As Night Guards  or Bite Guards (Often, Custom Nightguards Will Stop Clenching and Grinding)
  • Light Temple and Jaw Massage to Relax the Muscles
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medication or Analgesics

Stress Less, Smile More

With help from Dr. Mahmood, you can enjoy a life free from TMJ pain and problems caused by jaw misalignment to help you regain your quality of life. Contact Gloss Dentistry today so that you can start on the path towards better overall health behavior and well-being.
