What is Botox®?

Botox® is a prescription medicine that is injected into the facial muscles. As we age, our skin begins to sag due to collagen production slowing down. This leads to the development of lines in the skin, particularly around the eyes. Botox® injections serve to block the nerve impulses in and around the injection sites, reducing the muscle activity that causes the lines to form.

Why Botox®?

Facial lines make you look tired or older than you are. There are a number of reasons to choose Botox® over other cosmetic options. There is no surgery, just a handful of injections. While there will be some discomfort after the treatment, the recovery time with Botox® is much quicker than many of the alternatives.

Are there medical reasons to use Botox®?

Those afflicted with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ, also known as lockjaw) can benefit from Botox® treatments. The injections into the facial muscles can suppress the nerves that are constantly tensed and cause the lockjaw. Injections can also reduce teeth grinding and eliminate headaches.

What about my facial expressions?

Contrary to rumors, Botox® treatments only result in “frozen face syndrome” if they’re overdone, or done improperly. The injections will not radically change your facial appearance, just smooth out the lines. You’ll still be able to smile, frown, raise your eyebrows, and do everything you could before.

How long will the results from Botox® last?

Botox® treatments are temporary, which is something to keep in mind when planning your treatment with your cosmetician. Most treatments last for about four months, but individual results may vary. Dr. Mahmood will discuss everything about the procedure with you and what you should expect.
